Plans, directs and coordinates technical activities of the Histology laboratory in addition to performing pathology procedures. Work at other Mercy facilities performing the same functions, as required. Work alternate shifts, weekends and holidays as needed to adequately provide services. Perform other duties and projects as assigned.


  • Performs gross examination and dictation in all specimens for surgical pathology. Consults Pathologist with specific case concerns.
  • Initiates frozen section tissue examination including weight and measurements. Obtains sample for freezing as well as touch preps, imprints and smears. Assists with frozen and staining. Permanentizes slides after completion of the frozen section consultation.
  • Prepares and updates procedure manuals if required. Includes the P.A.'s expected functions, safety, disinfection, educational articles, Helps prepare for lab inspections. Communicates needed or anticipated changes to nursing personnel, lab administration and Pathologists.
  • As needed maintains files and procedures to facilitate efficient processing of cases referred to outside laboratories. The sample is prepared and packaged according to a specific protocol. A requisition unique to each test is completed and forwarded with the specimen.
  • Prepares tissue and slides for outside vendors for research purposes.
  • Communicates with other lab sections to ensure proper routing of specimens. Clarifies specimen issues such as fixation, dividing/sharing, sterility etc.
  • Responsible for grossing area and morgue disinfection, general organization and supply acquisition. Generates orders for repair of physical area and associated equipment. Responsible for disinfection and routine maintenance of equipment. Complies with safety regulations. Maintains equipment logs where indicated. Procures new products and minor equipment/instruments when indicated.
  • Maintains educational materials (articles, technical etc.) related to Pathology. Complete independent CE requirements.
  • Acquires control tissues for special stains and prepares control slides from frozen samples. Participates in routine and special studies.
  • Participates in orienting medical students on rotation. Assists physician offices with specimen preparation and/or special studies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Utilize the Information System to receive patients, order and collect samples, test results, answer questions from nurses and physicians, document quality control activities and produce reports required to perform job tasks.
  • Confirms accuracy of patient sample identification prior to performing analyses; evaluates specimen quality and identifies when unacceptable. Documents information concerning quality of specimen; such as grossing of surgical specimens and dictating to chart.
  • Investigates/resolves technical issues
  • Participates on departmental and interdepartmental committees or teams
  • Teaches students and trains new partners as needed.
  • Assures compliance with regulatory standards and represents area of specialty during accreditation surveys.
  • Serves as a consultant to medical staff, system laboratories and other departments in area of specialty.
  • Maintains appropriate supply level of inventory to assure smooth operation of department.
  • Recommends capital purchases during budget process including quotations and rationale for purchase.
  • Keeps current with developing technology and changes in the laboratory industry in the specialty of pathology.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Minimum of three years’ experience in Pathologist Assistant (grossing) procedures.
Must meet CLIA guideline requirements to perform high complexity testing


Certified as Pathologist Assistant by American Association of Pathologist Assistants (AAPA). ASCP certification preferred.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
