Responsible for correctly prioritizing and completing all steps of the scheduling, referral management, authorization, verification and registration process prior to patients receiving services. Identifies scheduling needs, reviews schedules, follows scheduling protocols and enters visit information for appropriate scheduling. Identifies, verifies, and captures appropriate patient demographic information and health insurance benefit eligibility information. Performs payer coverage investigation, as necessary, utilizing both internal and external tools and resources, to obtain reimbursement verification. Utilizes knowledge including, but not limited to, managed care, commercial, government, and work comp insurance billing requirements, as well as current coding guidelines and standards, to ensure resolution of pre-service edits, appropriate management of claims, initiation and direction of accounts for pre-authorization as required, prevention of timely filing claim denials, and procurement of appropriate reimbursement. This position requires understanding of healthcare Revenue Cycle and the importance of evaluating and securing all appropriate financial resources to maximize reimbursement to the health system. This position assumes clinical and financial risk of the organization when collecting and documenting information on behalf of the patient.

Responsible for ensuring claims are resolved with third party payers in a reasonable time frame as defined by Revenue Cycle metrics. This includes working claims that fail payer rejection edits in order to resolve errors and submit corrected claims. Assesses errors and quickly and effectively locates information to correct them and follow-up on claims for resolution. Works with other areas in the Revenue Cycle to obtain information necessary to correct errors or supply additional information as necessary for claim adjudication. Remains up-to-date on regulatory requirements through informal and formal updates, including self-study of payer bulletins and guidelines. Performs other duties as assigned.

The Patient Financial Counselors will be the embodiment of the hospital’s mission, vision and values and will liaison with the various clinic and hospital locations to ensure financial policies are being adhered to. The Patient Financial Counselor will greet patients or family members in the various clinic and hospital settings and assist them in answering any questions or concerns they may have regarding billing or payment options. The Patient Financial Counselor will have knowledge of all aspects of the department process from the registration process through the billing process. Patient Financial Counselors also assist patients and family members with the Presumptive Eligibility process and provide information related to various resources to obtain health care coverage. The Patient Financial Counselor also prepares and provides estimates of services to patients and completes benefit verification or precertification’s as required.
